Spicebush Swallowtail

Residents of the Ozarks, these butterflies are attracted to bright colored composites like this Mexican Torch Sunflower, Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) and other flowers. Note the orange spot missing on the underside of this swallowtail?s hindwing – this combined with the double row of orange spots distinguish it from other black swallowtails. The photo of its 5th instar caterpillar stage is in this gallery.
